Deployment of ADCP

SEACAMS staff recently completed fieldwork to support the community tidal project off the coast of the Llyn Peninsula with a brace of cruises aboard the RV Prince Madog to conduct multibeam and current profiling surveys of the area.

During the work a 4 beam acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) was deployed in a seabed mounted trawlproof frame over a two month duration, in the highly energetic Bardsey Sound region in order to establish the vertical structure of velocities within the water column over time.

During the deployment the device 'mysteriously' moved position, evident from the shift in the instruments' depth sensor and magnetic heading readouts.

This event occured during a spring flood tide on the 12th August 2014, with mean velocities recorded as being approximately 3.1m/s and even more impressive are near-bed velocities in excess of 2m/s in 38m water depth (see figures)!!!

The question is, do these currents produce enough force to propel a two metre square 300kg mooring along the seabed?
